This Week – Italy v England, Spurs v Man Utd and Liverpool v Spurs

This weekend sees the return of the Rugby Six Nations tournament, Saturday sees Wales at home to Scotland at 14:15 and France v Ireland at 16:45. All four of these teams (particularly Scotland and Ireland) have aspirations to win the tournament and so these are bound to be closely fought games. At 3pm on Sunday injury-hit England kick off their tournament against Italy in Rome at 3pm, this game will be shown on the BIG SCREEN with hot pies at half time.

Football fans can watch two huge ‘top-five’ games this week – Spurs are at home to Man United at 8pm on Wednesday evening, and at 4:30pm on Sunday Spurs are away to Liverpool.

Looking forward, Saturday 10th February sees England play Wales at Twickenham at 4:45pm. This game is always fantastic to watch and as usual it will be shown on the BIG SCREEN with hot pies at half time.

Jazz Newsletter – January 2018

Dear Jazzers,

The first jazz of the New Year was held on 9th January and we were greatly entertained by the Nevada Sreet Four, combining amazing musicianship with spontaneous humour, this quartet, an offshoot from the Bryan Ferry Orchestra took us on a jazz journey all the way from King Oliver to Bob Crosby. Among many highlights for me Duke Ellington’s Black and Tan Fantasy stood out. A great band to kick off our concert season.

Our next concert is on March 6th and features Cool Heat, Burnin’ Beat run by the fantastic drummer Steve Rushton. Those of you who attended last year’s performance by the Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra will remember Steve from that memorable evening. Steve will be partnered by chanteuse Loise Cookman in a recreation of the small Gene Krupa led band with that most underrated of female vocalists – Anita O’Day (Remember Sweet Georgia Brown from the Newport Jazz Festival 1958 film “Jazz on a Summer’s Day”).

Tickets will be on sale at the monthly Jazz Club next Tuesday 30th January, Price £10,  this is when we welcome back in all their glory, struggling to get into their band pants after the Christmas excess, Binky’s Dixie Demons, who will entertain us with their brand of Jazz Traditional. Everybody welcome – don’t forget the new times – 8pm – 10.30pm.

Keep jazzing

Mike

Jazz Newsletter – January 2018, Nevada Street Four 9th January

Happy New Year to all jazzers. The Jazz Club continues to thrive – we had 83 at the Christmas party last month and I’m sure everyone enjoyed the evening. Nice to see Big John Lee back at the club entertaining us with his mellifluous and laid-back tenor sax playing.
This month’s concert on Tuesday 9th January (did someone say the 9th January?) features The Nevada Street Four. This quartet of brilliant individual musicians exhibit their collective talent re-creating the small band sounds of the ’20’s and ’30’s.
Colin Good – piano and voice.
Studied composition and keyboards at Oxford University and is very much in demand in TV and theatre work. Colin is the musical director of the ’30’s style orchestra Vile Bodies. He is also known for his arrangements for The Bryan Ferry Orchestra on their recording of the ‘Jazz Age’. The songs were written by Bryan himself, many from the Roxy Music era, and some of which were used in Baz Luhrmann’s film ‘The Great Gatsby’. Influenced by Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson, Colin once toured with the ‘Ink Spots’.
Malcolm Earl Smith – trombone and voice.
Malcolm’s great love of the Jazz tradition in it’s entirety has made him a highly skilled and versatile performer. His expressive blues-influenced style has brought him work with Nat Gonella, Kenny Baker, John Dankworth, Martha Reeves and Bryan Ferry. Malcolm is a professor at Trinity College of Music where he serves as lecturer and director of the Trinity Jazz Ensemble.
Richard White – clarinet, bass sax and voice.
Richard is an original stylist .A multi-instrumentalist, he is equally at home on bass sax as he is on clarinet and is known for his expressive vocals. Richard’s past exploits (musical that is!) include touring the USA with the ‘Rio Trio’ (alongside Martin Wheatley) He is now involved with theatre work and several other specialist 1920’s and ’30’s bands.
Martin Wheatley – guitar and voice. An inventive and versatile guitarist (steel guitar, banjo and ukulele).
Martin specialises in musical styles of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s jazz and blues. He has played with most of the top vintage jazz stylists in the UK including Keith Nichols, The Charleston Chasers and Matthias Seuffert. He has toured the States extensively recording with violinist Andy Stein and trumpeter John Erik Kelso
Tickets are £10 for this monumental event and are available at Grayshott Social Club in Hill Road. I hope to see you all there to banish away those post-Christmas blues
Cheers
Mike
