I can confirm the Temperance Seven date at the club – Thursday 14th November. Tickets will be on sale at the Alan Barnes Concert next Tuesday 15th October.
Alan Barnes has a string of notable credits to his name after studying at Leeds College of Music in the late seventies. He cut his teeth early on with the Midnight Follies and The Pasadena Roof Orchestra. Both of whom (having had experience with them myself) were full of hard-bitten jazzers who took no prisoners. In 1988 Alan was invited to join the Humphrey Lyttelton Band to fill the chair vacated by Bruce Turner. Always working with the cream of British Jazz, especially pianist David Newton, Alan recorded several albums. Such is Alan’s musical versatility he has appeared as a session musician on albums by Selina Jones, Björk, Van Morrison and Bryan Ferry. His television and film tracks include The Tetley Bitter adverts featuring him on solo baritone sax.
As part of Alan’s quartet will be Robin Aspland on piano. Robin’s from across the Pennines from Alan and is in huge demand as an accompanist to the like of Clair Martin, Curtis Stigers, Anita Wardell and actress Jane Horrocks on her album “The Further Adventures of Little Voice”.
Matt Home, drummer also studied at Leeds College of Music and in 1999 moved to London and soon began playing with many of the leading musicians in Britain and Europe. His recording credits include albums with Stacey Kent, Ray Gelato, Karen Sharp, Dave Cliffe and many more. Current projects include the Brandon Allen Quartet with whom he regularly appears at Ronnie Scott’s Club and Nigel Price Trio with whom he has had a ten year collaboration.
Completing the line-up for the evening is bassist Andrew Cleyndert. Born in Birmingham Andrew’s first gigs were with the Tony Mann Trio in Manchester backing artists such as Pete King and Art Farmer. Moving to London he soon got absorbed into the jazz scene playing with Bud Shank, Red Rodney. Along with Alan, Andrew is among this year’s nominations in the British Jazz Awards.
I’m looking forward to the evening and I hope we will give this unique quartet a big Grayshott welcome!
