Jazz lovers were treated to an evening of bebop on 6th March with the Steve Rushton band – Cool Heat, Burning Beat. This was basically a tribute to that great American drummer of the 40s Gene Krupa and the stylish vocalist Anita O’Day. Louise Cookman played and sang the miss O’day part perfectly between wry observations and banter between her and madcap drummer Rushton. They were ably supported by Sue Greenaway, flute and tenor sax and David Prizeman trumpet.
Joining Steve in the rhythm section was guitarist Al Cherry and bassist Paul Morgan whose solo rendition of ‘In a sentimental mood’ by Duke Ellington, for me at any rate, stole the whole show in an evening of staccato jazz arrangements by Mr Steve Rushton.
Steve will be back at the club in July with Tony Jacobs and the Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra.
Next Tuesday the 27th features the Naffle supported by Bixie’s Dixie Demons. I will be giving the uke a run out as well as doing a few ballads with Richard and Bill. Look forward to seeing you all.
