Jazz Club Newsletter October 2018

Hello Folks, we’re back from our travels and looking forward to grabbing the wheel again. First of all a big thanks to Isabel for continuing to run the Naffle in our absence. Secondly, don’t forget the Firkin Fest at the Village Hall which starts tonight and features a modified (quiet) version of Bill’s Demons. Whilst in Australia, we received an e mail from Rae Boxall saying that a friend of hers Cyril Bevan was playing with the Dan Barnett group in Australia. She didn’t know where and it’s a big place etc. Lo and behold! They were playing at Merimbula Jazz Club, about 30k from where we were living. Needless to say we attended and were treated to a terrific night of jazz by this quintet of Dan Barnett. His co-leader on the gig was George Washingmachine a superb exponent of the jazz violin. (Check him out on You Tube.) Cy, incidentally was the group’s drummer in a fairly young outfit tipping the scales at a mere 88 years of age!

Our Jazz this month will be a tribute to our former trumpet player Martin Horsfall so sadly taken from us a few months ago. The aim of the evening is to raise money for Martin’s family and to this end all the musicians will be donating their fee to this worthy cause. We have some notable musicians attending including Denny Ilett, John Lee and Sue Greenaway who played with Martin in an Oxford Jazz Group. I’m sure we can overcome our sadness and have a great night in memory of Martin. The tickets for the forthcoming Pocket Orchestra concert on Tuesday 16th November are now on sale at the club.

Keep Jazzing
