Jazz Newsletter August 2018

Tony Jacobs and the Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra did the club proud a couple of weeks ago with a stunning display of musicianship, style and presentation. A sweltering audience were delighted to hear Tony and his band roll back the years to the Gatsby era and beyond. Standouts for me were Duke Ellington’s “Black and Tan Fantasy” featuring the hot trumpet of Pete Rudeforth and Sue Greenaway’s “I’m in the mood for love” segueing into Ellington’s “Creole love call”. Definitely a return for this band next year.

The next Jazz Club night, Tuesday 28th August, will feature a guest on trumpet – Andy Norman. Andy will be travelling with our overseas correspondent as both of them share the same island. An old school friend of Richard’s, both were prime movers of what jazz there was in prehistoric times.

Andy leads the Unity Stompers, an Island trad band with a line of descent going back to the 1950’s. He has been active in much amateur music across a wide field, especially big band, military and concert bands. All-in-all a (h)andy sort of person. Andy will be with us for the August and September sessions.

Keep Jazzing,
