59 people were treated to an action-packed musical performance by drummer Steve Rushton and his band on the 9th April at the Grayshott Jazz Club. Steve was in sparkling form alongside a rhythm section of veteran bass player Paul Morgan and stand-in key-board player Mike Gorman who provided a splendid rhythmical platform for trumpet and flugal horn player Dave Priseman and multi reedist and flute player Mick Foster. All this was topped off with the vocal pyrotechnics of Miss Louise Cookman who’s portrayal of Anita O’Day at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival was outstanding. For me though bassist, Paul Morgan’s feature on ‘In a sentimental mood’ took the audience to a higher musical level. This band surely deserves better recognition than it already has.
The Jazz at the club next week is a normal (Sub-normal/abnormal) session with Bill’s usual gang now featuring Andy Norman for the next couple of months.
The next concert is, of course, Charity Ukes for the Air Ambulance on Tuesday 14th May 8 -10.30 starring the uke group Shades supported by Victoria. Admission £10 and tickets now on sale at the club
There will be the usual raffle (RAFFLE not NAFFLE) and all proceeds will be going to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance
I hope you you will enjoy this evening of Ukulele playing and singing in aid of a very good cause.
